Lily Dotting, the Best Way to Garden with Lilies

Lilies are so lovely but so short-lived in the garden I rarely plant them. Flowers with extended blooming are what I go for, so I hesitated when my daughter grabbed a box of 'Blackout' lilies at the nursery and asked me to buy them for her. She'd never asked for flowers before, so in hopes of getting her hooked on flower gardening I indulged her.

Placing the lilies turned out to be easier than I thought. My front border is a blend of red, yellow, blue and orange flowered perennials, so I randomly dotted the lilies among the preexisting plants. The result was gorgeous, and I'll never have to worry about the lilies leaving colorless holes behind. I'm convinced it's the best way to garden with lilies.

Next year I plan to get more brilliant Asiatics to add to the show. Maybe 'Forever Susan' or 'Dot.com'.

My daughter's choice of 'Blackout' lilies was a good one. Neighbors even commented on them.

Dotting the lilies through my preexisting beds was the best way to showcase them.
